Summer Tips for a Noisy Garage Door

A noisy garage door if not addressed quickly can eventually become a larger problem eventually requiring garage door replacement. Noisy garage doors can be caused by any of the many springs, pulleys and cables that make the opening system work. As garage door installation experts in Lino Lakes, we would like to offer some of the reasons your garage door could be making noise as well as how to keep your garage door working well all summer.

You can generally expect a garage door to last you for a decade or two after you have a new one installed. But, once your garage door starts to act up, it may not be long before you require garage door installation. Be sure you inspect your garage door on a regular basis. About once a week or so, inspect the garage door itself as well as the mechanisms to ensure everything is working as it should. If you notice a part that is broken, frayed or worn through, call our garage door company for assistance. Many parts of a garage door, especially the springs, should only be repaired or replaced by a trained professional.

Inspect

When you hear strange noises coming from your garage door, start by checking, tightening and lubricating all parts of the opening system. Use a socket wrench to tighten the nuts on the track system as well as tighten the opener chain and lubricate the opener track, hinges, torsion bar bearings and springs. If none of these work or if you are uncomfortable performing any of these tasks then contact the garage door installation experts at Premium Garage Door Service for help.

It is important to make sure your garage door opens and closes as it should to ensure it lasts all summer. And, if your garage door is getting old and you would like to look into a new garage door installation to update your home, now is a great time of year to do it!

Pinpoint the Problem

By identifying the type of noise your garage door is making, you can determine what may be causing it. For example, a loud ticking sound could mean it’s the rollers or a grating noise could mean it’s the coils. The well-trained ear of an expert garage door installation specialist can listen to your garage door and help pinpoint the problem.

The Right Door for Your Unique Garage Door Installation

In the midst of a renovation, purchasing a new home, or having a home built, the right garage door may not be at the very top of your list. This will be an aesthetic and practical choice you will faced with at some point. Thankfully, your options are nearly endless in the pursuit of a new garage door. Premium Garage Door Service can and will install any of a wide variety of colored and styled garage doors. Conducting garage door installation for Eagan area homes and businesses, we have a few suggestions on what you should be pondering when it comes to making the ultimate decision on what will be your new garage door.

garage door installation

What is the style of your unique home? How will your new door fit with the style of your home? If your home is covered in intricate design or multiple bold colors, than a more detailed and decorative garage door may be the choice for you. If your home is plain Jane with a simple color scheme and largely free of style accents, go with a garage door installation that yields a simple, even understated garage door. No matter what choice you make, go with a door color that helps it match with the color scheme of your home’s exterior.
If you are having a difficult time when it comes to choosing the color, just take a look at the home itself. What color are your window frames? If they are a different hue than is the rest of the home, what is it? If your home is white but your window frames and general bordering are black, choose a black garage door. Matching the new garage door to your home’s trim is something of a mistake that a lot of homeowner’s make. Opting instead to match your garage door installation choice with your trim will provide a uniform and matching look that will not make it look too formal.
What about the minutia of your new garage door installation option? 21st century garage doors bring with them the option of things like windows, which you can most certainly choose. Maybe you want a high end look with an elaborate handle for the bottom of the outside of the garage door. Accessorizing on small levels that will not alter the functionality of the door are entirely possible.

Make a statement with garage installation at your Eagan home by calling Premium Garage Door Service at 651-344-0489. Also contact us and Request Service!

Benefits of a New Garage Door

There are several reasons a new garage door makes sense for your Twin Cities home, and a few big benefits you can receive by going with such a purchase. We’ve picked the top three and detailed them below.

Increased home value
For homes selling at $175,000 or higher, a $2,000 garage door investment could add as much as $7,000 to the resale value. Not a bad return on investment, huh?

More protection
Depending on the type of garage door you have in place now, an up-to-date garage door could provide greater security not only to the vehicles that are stored inside your garage, but to your family as well, since many garages have an entry door to the home.

A cleaner home
A new garage door with a keypad for entry can become a second front door. When coming indoors from poor weather conditions, or from a dirty job, your garage gives you a sheltered location to take off your messy items of clothing before entering your actual home. This helps keep your home clean.

Importance of a Properly Functioning Garage Door: Keeps Bears Out

With National Garage Door Safety Month wrapping up, we'd like to remind you again just how important it is to keep your garage door completely closed and locked. Not only will it help you keep burglars out of your garage and your home, it'll also help you keep out other unwanted intruders; namely, animals, like the bear cub in the video below. The cub, who became trapped in the garage after crawling in under the door, crawled on top of the door's track and hung there until his mother arrived. Amazingly, the mother bear opened the garage door like a human and held it open while she called for her cub.

A garage door that closes and locks properly can help you keep guests like this one out of your garage. If you haven't had your door checked out in a while, you may want to get in touch with a Minneapolis garage doors company like Premium Garage Door Service to have it looked at. Regular maintenance to your garage door can keep it operating as intended, and can also help spot wear on certain components that could lead to larger, more expensive repairs in the future.

Make sure your garage door is working the way it's supposed to. Get in touch with Premium Garage Door Service today at (612) 234-4812 to schedule an appointment.

Checking On Your Automatic Opener

An automatic garage door opener can add a fair amount of convenience to your life. Think about living with a manual door in the past, which required you to get out of the car and open or close the door every time you wanted to enter or exit your garage. An automatic opener provides you with a remote control and the ability to open and close the door with the push of a button.

Of course, as is the case with anything that has moving parts, you may run into some issues down the line with your automatic garage door opener. That's why it's important to regularly check out these parts to ensure that the opener continues to function properly. Fuses can go bad, as well as power sources and switches, and the more mechanical parts, such as the pulleys and levers that are required for the garage door to physically open and close. By taking a look at these items occasionally to make sure everything looks good and no wearing has occurred, you can be sure your garage door will work as intended.

If you're already experiencing problems and you need a repair company to turn to, get in touch with Minneapolis garage doors repair company Premium Garage Door Service.

The Importance of a Properly Working Garage Door

Is your garage door currently in a state of disrepair? If so, you could be putting yourself at risk of being burglarized.

Some cities, like El Cajon, California, are seeing an increase in robberies as a result of burglars entering homes through open garage doors. If your garage door is not closing properly and it can either be opened easily or is partially open already, someone intent on invading your home could simply enter through that very easy passage and gain easier access to the inside of your home.

If your garage door is in need of some kind of repair to get it back into working order, you should absolutely not wait to take care of it. Get in touch with a St Paul garage door repair company like Premium Garage Door Service and schedule service on your garage door as soon as possible. It could mean the difference between staying protected or having your home burglarized. Call us today at (651) 344-0489 to make your appointment for a repair.

Garage Door Murals

Looking for a way to make your garage door stand out a bit from the others in the neighborhood? A German advertising agency called Zweinullvier Werbeagentur figured out a way to do just that.

Take a look at these.

Fighter Jet Garage Mural

No, that's not an enormous dump truck stuck in that garage. There's not a race car or an airplane in the others, either. These are actually murals that are placed on your garage door to give the illusion that something more unbelievable is stored inside. The company has over 200 other designs, ranging from $230 (for a single door) to $450 (for double doors).

EZ-Set Garage Door Torsion Springs

While EZ-Set torsion springs look a lot like the more common standard torsion springs, the hardware differs significantly, as EZ-Set torsion springs are mounted to winders on the ends of a shaft.

Depending on the size of your garage door, it will likely use either one or two EZ-Set torsion springs. Wider garage doors will also have two shafts, as well as a coupler to join the two shafts.

If your broken garage door spring is an EZ-Set torsion spring, get in touch with Premium Garage Door Service to schedule a garage door spring repair.

Standard Torsion Springs for Garage Doors

As the most common type of garage door springs there are, standard torsion springs are usually found in installations of one or two springs, through four or more can be used for garages that require wide openings for large vehicles.

Standard torsion springs can be installed in one of four different configurations: the linear system, the duplex system, the triplex system, or the mixed system. The linear system is used mostly on wide garage doors. The duplex system uses two larger springs, and each spring has a smaller spring inside. The triplex system is much like the duplex system, except three springs are inside the outer spring instead of two. Finally, the mixed system uses a combination of the linear system and either the duplex or triplex system.

If your garage uses standard torsion springs, the professionals at Premium Garage Door Service are experienced in installing them in any kind of setup. Whether your garage utilizes the linear, duplex, triplex, or mixed systems, we'll safely install your springs and get your garage door working like new. Give us a call today to get started on your garage door spring replacement or repair.

Automatic Garage Doors Offer Safety Benefits

Have you ever hurt yourself pulling or pushing your garage door? It can be a burden – and bad on the back – to have to operate a manual garage door, especially when it’s raining and snowing. Manual garage doors also leave your home with a serious security risk, as burglars can gain entry much easier than they would with an automatic garage door. Automatic doors make your home much more secure, and are easier to operate. Here are some other big benefits to automatic garage doors:
  • You won’t have to step out of the car to open or close the door. You can open it as you pull into your driveway, which is especially helpful when the weather is cold.
  • Your home’s appeal and security will be increased. Many automatic doors can be linked to your home’s security system, and an alarm will sound if a burglar ever tries to get into your garage.
  • Automatic doors are offered in a wide variety, giving you a wide range of ways to make your home more appealing. Steel doors are durable and not in need of as much maintenance. Wooden doors are great for those who want a natural look, and can be painted or varnished to make it more beautiful and durable.

When you are in the market for a new garage door, you need to think of the safety of your family. Automatic garage doors from Minneapolis garage door installation company Premium Garage Door Service can do the trick. Learn more at www.PremiumGarageDoorService.com

Garage Door Repair FAQs

Here are some of the more common questions we get about garage door repair services:

How long does a typical garage door opener last?
You should expect an average lifespan of eight to 10 years, but some last three years and 25 or more for others.

My garage door makes a lot of noise. Why?
It’s most likely the result of the usual wear and tear on the rollers, hinges and bearings. Excessive use over time will cause squeaks, vibrations and hums.

I’ve pushed the opener button, but it does nothing. What can I do?
Make sure the opener is still plugged in, and that power is coming from the socket to the opener. If power is being transferred, then it could be either a mechanical or electrical problem that should be diagnosed by a qualified garage door service tech.

Garage Door Opener FAQ

Here are some of the most commonly asked questions we get about garage door openers:

My garage door opener won’t do anything when the button is pushed. What should I do?
Is the opener still plugged in? Is there power coming from the outlet? If the answer to both of these questions is yes, then you should call your garage door contractor to have the look more into the matter.

The light comes on, but the opener isn’t doing anything. What can I do?
It’s most likely a problem in the electrical or mechanical workings. Remove the motor head cover (be sure to first unplug the operator). However, it’s best to have a professional look into the issue.

Both transmitters died at the same time. Is this because of the batteries?
It’s more likely an issue with the radio receiver in the garage, or inside the operator itself. Contact a professional to have them look into the issue.

Why do I have to hold the wall button down to get my garage door to close?
Probably because of a blockage, misalignment or malfunction in the safety beams. If there are any objects in the signal’s way, move them and verify the lights are lit per the manufacturer’s directions. If so, contact your garage door company to have them look into the issue.

My garage door is crooked in opening. Why?
One of the cables probably can off. Do not touch them until you have a professional look into the matter.

Garage Door FAQ

Here are some of the more common questions we get about garage doors:

I need a new garage door. How do I know what size to get?
You’ll have to measure the width of the finished opening, and then measure the height. The reason is that door sizes are always shown and listed in this manner.

How do I release the door from the operator so I can open it by hand?
Make sure the door is fully closed, and simply pull the red release cord down to the floor.

How can I tell if the garage door springs are balanced properly?
Open the door halfway and let go of the door, and if it stays in the same position, the springs are balanced properly. If the door drops or open on its own, then you should have the springs adjusted by a contractor.

Can’t I just install the door myself?
Installing a garage door isn’t a “do-it-yourself” type of job. It’s the largest moving object in your home, and has a number of small parts requiring specific technical expertise. Connecting the springs can be dangerous, and proper installation is critical. A professional contractor can install the door in a short time, and will ensure all safety requirements are met.

How do I dispose of my old door?
Most dealers and installers will haul the old one away. Discuss with the company doing the work.

Common Garage Door Opener Problems

The staff at Premium Garage Door Service comes across many garage door opener problems. Here's a list of the most common, along with solutions:

Opener doesn't operate with either the remote or wall switch
There's probably a disruption with the power source. Make sure the motor is plugged in, and if so, check the circuit breaker and fuses.

Garage door won't fully shut or reverses after hitting the floor
Usually, this is because the close limit switch needs adjustment. Check your manufacturer's guide or have a garage door technician investigate the issue.

Door reverses before hitting the floor
See if the sensors are on the same level, facing each other. Uneven sensors will not work in sync, thus causing the door to reverse. If evened, then it could be that the close force needs adjustment.

Garage door does not completely open or close
Make sure there are no objects in the way of the sensors. If the beams are clear, take a look at the hardware for any loose or broken parts.

Remote control doesn't open or close the door
The simple solution is to change the remote's batteries. If you've put a fresh set in and it still doesn't work, then take a look at the remote's and opener's frequencies to see if they are the same. It also could be because of the remote being operated out of range, the motor unit's antenna is not hanging down or the remote needs programmed.
